Biblical Framework
The Bible tells us “religion God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” —James 1:27
Tukutana’s staff and volunteers heed this calling by coming alongside East African churches, leaders, and individuals as they meet physical and spiritual needs of orphans, widows, and the most vulnerable in their communities.
Discovery Bible Study
Tukutana invites those we walk with to learn more about God’s love, character, and promises through Discovery Bible Study (DBS). In Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, widows, children, and local church, school, and community leaders gather at Tukutana community centers and program sites to study passages from God’s Word and have life-enriching conversations stemming from the following questions:
What do you like most about this passage?
What is most challenging?
What does this passage teach you about God?
What do you learn about yourself?
What is God directing you to do in response?
Who can you share this with this week?
Psalm 33:13-22
The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do. We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.
Romans 12:9-16
Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. …Hate what is wrong. …Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection. …God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. …Always be eager to practice hospitality. …Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. …Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. …And, don’t think you know it all!
Isaiah 1:17
Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widow
Psalm 41:1
Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.
Psalm 69:32
Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged.
I Corinthians 3:5-9
We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers.
