UGANDA
Since 2016, Uganda has welcomed more refugees than any African country. One million South Sudanese, who fled civil war in their homeland, live in western Uganda. In addition, over 600,000 Congolese poured into the country in 2023 to escape violent rebel groups who pillaged their homes and took countless lives. Due to the influx of displaced people, only 29% of native Ugandans and refugees in the West Nile region have access to clean, safe water. Tukutana and our devoted partners are helping to address this crisis by providing wells for Ugandan churches along the South Sudan and DRC borders. Hand-in-hand with strategic, experienced water experts and local officials, we equip pastors and elders to meet their congregants’ and communities’ needs.
"I want to assure the community here that I’ve been monitoring this new water source. The water quality is good. I took samples. We have many organizations drilling without permits and operating illegally. Tukutana has followed the proper procedures and their wells are legally registered in the national water database. Tukutana has obeyed the authorities. They have been cooperative and have formed a very representative water committee to ensure the well is maintained for years to come.”

SOUTH SUDAN
Seven years ago, a leading East African health official urged Tukutana to expand our water initiative to South Sudan. This country faces food and water scarcity, conflict, and displacement. Only 10% of South Sudan’s population has access to safe water. Tukutana welcomed the opportunity to meet both physical and spiritual needs in this underserved region.
With Tukutana’s generous partners, we have completed more than a dozen water wells in the Yei District and in northern Bahr el Ghazal. Tukutana water systems in South Sudan are producing safe water, and reducing illnesses for more than 12,000 people every week.
As in Uganda and the DRC, with every water project Tukutana implements, our staff spend months on the ground. They minister to villagers and refugees, and equip local churches to better serve their communities. Tukutana outreach in South Sudan includes health training, sustainability training, Bible studies, discipleship, and evangelism.
"Our children may now attend school because they will no longer have to travel far to collect water from small, mud creeks shared by livestock."

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of CONGO
In 2020, Tukutana expanded to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where we partner with Water is Basic, Transform DRC, and local churches to quench both spiritual and physical thirst. At the request of the community members we serve, rather than drilling boreholes in the DRC, we construct above-ground rain-catchment systems.
To enable the large tanks to collect rain, the systems are attached to structures with roof gutters. Our crews do this by building a church with each water tank we provide. This method bridges our water projects with church planting and congregational growth. Using state-of-the-art Sawyer water filters (designed to last 40 years), Tukutana has provided 24 DRC water projects that yield hundreds of gallons of purified water each week in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, and vulnerable communities.
"We thank the Lord for providing us with safe drinking water that will help thousands of our people suffering in displaced persons’ camps.”
—Rev. Theophile Kanyabugoyi Mmanirarora, Director, TransformDRC + Water is Basic (Tukutana partners).
