Water + Sanitation & Hygiene

Tukutana WATER projects produce thousands of gallons of purified water daily. The safe, accessible water is enriching the lives of more than 65,000 widows, orphans, refugees, and vulnerable people in Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Tukutana WATER Solutions

RESEARCH

In discerning where to provide Tukutana water projects, our team considers a communities’ current water sources, how far peoplemust walk to get water, and the viability of providing a water system in their area.

MOBILIZE

Tukutana’s field staff and national partners work with local church leaders to establish working groups that mobilize communities and oversee the use and maintenance of each water system we provide. A “Covenant Agreement” (MOU) is signed between Tukutana and church and community leaders prior to construction.

SURVEY

Tukutana works with government officials, church leaders, health inspectors, and drilling contractors to identify the most viable drilling locations in the remote communities receiving Tukutana water projects.

CONSTRUCT

The massive rig and sound of the drill bit cutting through rock, and the thrill of striking water draw hundreds of villagers when we drill. Standing for hours in scorching heat, they marvel as the machine eats through layers of earth and lays a vertical pipeline as deep as 100 meters into the ground.

working together … with hope

CAST

After successfully tapping into viable water, a hand pump or water tank is installed with a cement platform and drain.

TEST

Tukutana utilizes best-of-class crews, rigs, and components for each water system we construct. Our projects are inspected by the Ministry of Health and Uganda Water Commission. All Tukutana WATER projects are filed with the Uganda Revenue Authority and Department of Health and Sanitation.

TEACH

In addition to providing water-source management instruction, our national staff and conduct Water, Sanitation + Hygiene {WASH} classes for Tukutana WATER beneficiaries.

DEDICATE

Following the completion of each water project, the recipients gather to worship and thank God for His provision. Pastors share an message with the hundreds of villagers in attendance. Government and health officials give speeches, and people dance and praise God.

UGANDA

Since 2016, Uganda has welcomed more refugees than any African country. One million South Sudanese, who fled civil war in their homeland, live in western Uganda. In addition, over 600,000 Congolese poured into the country in 2023 to escape violent rebel groups who pillaged their homes and took countless lives. Due to the influx of displaced people, only 29% of native Ugandans and refugees in the West Nile region have access to clean, safe water. Tukutana and our devoted partners are helping to address this crisis by providing wells for Ugandan churches along the South Sudan and DRC borders. Hand-in-hand with strategic, experienced water experts and local officials, we equip pastors and elders to meet their congregants’ and communities’ needs.

"I want to assure the community here that I’ve been monitoring this new water source. The water quality is good. I took samples. We have many organizations drilling without permits and operating illegally. Tukutana has followed the proper procedures and their wells are legally registered in the national water database. Tukutana has obeyed the authorities. They have been cooperative and have formed a very representative water committee to ensure the well is maintained for years to come.

SOUTH SUDAN

Three years ago, a leading East African health official urged Tukutana to expand our water initiative to South Sudan, a country plagued by food and water scarcity, conflict, and displacement. With only 10% of South Sudan's population having safe water access, Tukutana welcomed the chance to meet physical and spiritual needs in this underserved region.

With the support of Tukutana’s generous WATER partners, we have completed more than a dozen water wells in the Yei District and in northern Bahr el Ghazal. Tukutana WATER systems  in South Sudan are producing safe water and reducing illnesses for more than 12,000 people every week.

As in Uganda and the DRC, with every water project Tukutana implements, our staff spend months on the ground ministering to villagers and refugees, and equipping local churches to better serve their communities. Tukutana outreach in South Sudan includes health training, sustainability training, Bible studies, discipleship, and evangelism.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

In 2020, Tukutana expanded to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where our team supports the work of Transform DRC, Water is Basic, and local churches to quench spiritual and physical thirst.

Because DRC contains more natural resources than any country, rebel groups and foreigners routinely enter rural villages to mine for gold, diamonds, oil, cobalt, and other minerals. Understandably, when Tukutana and our local ministry partners offer safe water to impoverished DRC communities, the villagers fear we will use drilling rigs to pillage their land and force them from their homes. Respectively, rather than drill boreholes in DRC, we construct above-ground rain-catchment systems.

To enable the large tanks to collect rain, the systems are attached them to structures with roof gutters.  Our crews do this by constructing a church building with each water tank we provide. This method bridges our water projects with church planting and congregational growth. Using state-of-the-art Sawyer water filters (designed to last 40 years!), Tukutana has provided 21 DRC water projects that yield hundreds of gallons of purified water each week in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, and vulnerable communities.

"We thank the Lord for providing us with safe drinking water that will help thousands of our people suffering in displaced persons’ camps.”
